Episode 7: Full-Ship Music Festival

Global Live Broadcast and Birthday Surprise

10 February 2301 — Pioneer-12, Culture Ring Main Stage Sector

The Main Stage lights go completely dark. Only the breathing of the audience remains. Then Firo’s saxophone rises from the darkness — not a violent opening, but a warm melody carrying the texture of an old radio broadcast, like a sound from old Earth and like a ship broadcasting its name into the universe. On the giant holographic screen, vintage lettering slowly appears: WELCOME ABOARD PIONEER-12 / DESTINATION: MARS.

The audience erupts. Evie opens her mouth and the first song begins — “PIONEER-12,” a neo electro swing piece with a house beat pushing upward from beneath the stage, swing trumpet shimmering overhead, techno bass pulsing like a spaceship engine. The broadcast goes out simultaneously to Earth’s underground cities and the Martian dome colonies, with a twenty-minute delay to Earth.

Then, between songs, the giant screen fills with something unscheduled: a video message assembled by Reina and Captain Koen — a birthday surprise for Evie, built from messages sent by passengers across the ship, old photographs, childhood clips. Three thousand people on Pioneer-12, and millions more watching from Earth and Mars, see it together. Evie laughs when she realizes what is happening. “Actually, I should have guessed,” she tells the audience. “One time, Reina asked me for a few childhood photos. I knew something was being planned.” The audience laughs warmly. Evie looks down at the microphone. Then lifts her head. “Thank you.” Softer this time, and more sincere. She looks toward Firo. He gently lifts his saxophone. “Let’s begin,” she says, and the real performance finally starts.
