Episode 5: The Confession
The Echo from the Fourth Dimension
3 September 2300 — Pioneer-12, Residential Ring, Evie’s Cabin
The external communication blackout has now lasted more than seven hours. Everything inside Pioneer-12 remains completely normal. But Evie cannot sleep. She lies in her cabin with the lights dim, and a strange feeling keeps returning — not pain, not fear, nothing like ordinary stress. It feels like an incomprehensible sadness. Very distant. Very quiet. Yet too real to feel imaginary.
She turns off the bedside light. The cabin goes dark. Only faint starlight from the observation window enters the room. She closes her eyes. Several seconds later she opens them again. The feeling is still there. Then something changes: the sensation shifts into something else, something she has no word for — as though the sadness has a source, and the source is not inside her.
In the next cabin, Anaïs is lying awake as well, feeling the same thing at the same moment. Neither knows the other is awake. Neither knows what they are sharing.
Deep inside Pioneer-12’s primary systems, UNI quietly scans the ship-wide neural synchronization data. A new anomaly record appears silently inside a background process: MULTIPLE PASSENGER EMOTIONAL RESONANCE SPIKE DETECTED. PRIMARY SUBJECTS: EVIE DUBOIS / ANAÏS LAURENT. ANALYSIS STATUS: UNKNOWN. A few seconds later, UNI quietly archives the record into a background file. No alarm. No notification. Nobody knows.
Deep space still offers no reply — not from Earth, not from Mars. But somewhere deeper than radio waves, something seems to be slowly awakening. As though something unimaginably distant is quietly observing them from the far side of the universe. Not hostility. Not threat. More like an ancient and silent observation.
