Episode 5: The Confession

The Planet Killer Secret

3 September 2300, 23h00 — Pioneer-12, Lower Central Spine, Neural Network Server Maintenance Sector

The external communication blackout has now lasted more than seven hours — far longer than expected. Everything aboard Pioneer-12 remains normal, but the silence from Earth and Mars sits heavier with every passing hour. Deep in the ship’s lower maintenance sector, Seb has been working alone since before midnight.

The alien oscillation signal has not stopped. Every eleven minutes and twenty-seven seconds, the same pattern pulses through the ship’s background systems. Seb has been tracking it carefully, and tonight he finds something he was not looking for: the signal is not simply scanning Pioneer-12’s infrastructure. It is specifically targeting the nuclear weapons data being carried by a Big 4 military research delegation aboard the ship. Whatever is sending this signal knows exactly what humanity has brought into deep space.

Seb backs up everything into his private NLD and contacts Firo. Firo arrives quickly and studies the data without speaking. Seb shows him the eleven-minute-twenty-seven-second interval, the targeting pattern, the weapons data overlap. Firo’s expression does not change, but his stillness says everything.

After Firo leaves, Seb stands alone beneath the cold white lights. He looks down at the backup inside his NLD. Eleven minutes and twenty-seven seconds. High-dimensional code. Sagittarius resonance frequencies. Nuclear data. Military research delegations. A ship carrying three thousand migrants flying quietly toward Mars. He slowly closes the projection. In that moment he knows he can no longer return to being an ordinary engineer. Some sounds, once heard, cannot be ignored. And deep inside Pioneer-12’s systems, something still knocks softly, every eleven minutes and twenty-seven seconds.
