Episode 11: The Sagittarius Gift
The Encrypted File
6 April 2301, 15h35 — XE-1 Underground Cultural Sector, Techno Club “Red Pulse”
A small daytime rave is still running inside XE-1’s underground cultural sector — the Mars Unity Festival’s final unofficial gathering. The massive underground club feels softer than a late-night venue: young migrants in the lounge area talking and drinking soft beverages, others moving lightly near the dance floor to melodic techno. Hologram sunlight simulates an Earth afternoon sky. Orange-red light spreads slowly across the metallic walls.
Vera is at a tall table near the lounge, drinking a German black beer and half-listening to the music, when her NLD device receives something unexpected. A file. No sender name. No message attached. Just an encrypted data package, arriving through an unofficial channel she does not recognize.
She contacts Firo immediately. He arrives quickly, takes the NLD, and examines the encryption. The file is layered — multiple protection levels, some of which he has not seen before outside of classified UN communications. He brings it to Evie’s apartment, where Anaïs is also present. Evie is in bed with a fever — the stress and exertion of the festival has finally caught up with her. Toshiko is there too, having arrived shortly before Firo.
Firo carefully decrypts one layer of the file. Inside is an audio recording — something captured through Evie’s old studio headphones, which she left in her bedroom the previous night. The recording is not music. It is a sound that none of them have heard before: layered, non-human, carrying a resonance structure that Seb immediately recognizes as matching the Sagittarius signal frequencies from Pioneer-12. Someone — or something — used Evie’s headphones to leave a message. Anaïs looks at Evie. “Mars Immigration Ambassador job description always this strange?” Evie, despite the fever, almost smiles.
