Episode 4: Chapter 2

The Artist’s Crush

The First Breath of the Resonance Gown

14 August 2300 — Pioneer-12, Culture Ring Design Cabin

The next morning, Anaïs does not go to the public dining hall. She asks Inès, her personal AI agent, to bring a black coffee and a small piece of almond bread. The bread stays almost untouched. The coffee does not. She sits at the center of the design cabin, the gown sketch from the previous night floating before her. At the bottom: Do not shine for power. Shine for the soul.

She rarely writes sentences like that on design drafts. High fashion requires precision — the angle of a shoulder line by a few millimetres, the weight of one layer of gauze, the relationship between waist support and body movement. Those are the languages she knows. But this time, precision is not enough. She needs a garment that can turn Evie’s comfort into something the audience can feel.

When Evie arrives for the fitting, Anaïs carefully places the first completed layer — the silver-white fabric, light as mist — across Evie’s shoulders. She notes how Evie carries it: not stiffly, not self-consciously, but as if the fabric has always been waiting to belong to that particular body. The neural-reactive fibers along the shoulder line and waist respond to Evie’s breathing, shifting faintly with each breath.

Anaïs calls it the Resonance Gown. She allows Evie to take the first fitting layer back to her cabin overnight. After Evie leaves, she stands a long time without moving. Then she adds a small note beside the design sketch: Resonance Test 01: Successful. After a pause, one more line: Not to shine brighter. Just to know she is not alone.
