Echoes Between the Stars
Shadows of the Dark Knight
14 June 2300 — Pioneer-12, Anaïs’s Cabin and Outer Service Walkway
The retro disco rhythm is still bouncing lightly in Anaïs’s cabin when a nineteenth-century constellation clasp — an heirloom piece used in the gown design — slips through a maintenance grate near the door. In 0.7 gravity, small objects travel farther than expected. The cabin maintenance map traces the clasp into the outer service walkway of the Residential Ring.
Evie and Anaïs venture into the narrow maintenance corridor to find it. The space is cold and functional — nothing like the living quarters above. As they search, Anaïs notices a hologram security terminal. Through it she sees a blurred log image from a previous night shift: a figure moving through the maintenance channels with careful, trained precision. Someone who knows these routes. Someone using them in the dark, quietly, for reasons the maintenance logs do not record.
They find the clasp and return to the cabin. Anaïs says nothing directly to Evie. But inside, something has shifted. The cold light left by the hologram has not fully faded. She has understood something: Firo is not only the man who plays beautiful melodies in the recreation lounge. There is another identity within him — one that moves through the ship’s hidden spaces with practiced purpose.
From that moment, the way Anaïs sees Firo changes permanently. Saxophonist. Mysterious man. Guardian in the dark. Or perhaps — a dark knight. She does not know which one is the real him. But she knows she will be watching. For Evie.
