Episode 2: Chapter 1

Echoes Between the Stars

Loneliness in Artificial Gravity

4 June 2300 — Pioneer-12, Residential Ring

Pioneer-12 has finally left the Earth-Moon L1 Gateway Dock. At exactly twelve noon the previous day, Captain Koen’s voice moved through every speaker on the ship — announcing final safety confirmation and the start of the journey to Mars. Passengers gathered at the observation windows and watched in silence as the lights of the dock drifted slowly away.

Now the ship is in deep space. The gravity in the Residential Ring has transitioned from 1.0 Earth gravity to 0.7 — Martian gravity. Most passengers have adapted. Children no longer jump too hard. Coffee ripples more slowly in cups. Coat hems linger longer in the air before settling.

But Evie finds the transition harder than the physical adjustment. Without the familiar rhythm of Underground Paris, without the streets and dressing rooms she knew, she feels a dislocation that 0.7 gravity alone cannot explain. She still reaches instinctively for rails when she stands. She cannot find a natural rhythm to her steps. Everything is too new, and the newness has no bottom.

Anaïs notices. She suggests they attend an official exchange gathering being organized for new migrants — a way to learn about the ship’s different rings, its services, its programs. Not for the officials, she says, but for themselves.

Beyond the transparent wall at the end of the corridor, the central spine and the distant Culture Ring rotate slowly under starlight. A music hall, broadcast rooms, libraries, and public lounges — and perhaps others like Evie, people who cannot yet find their direction under this new gravity. Evie takes a deep breath. The air is still unfamiliar. But it no longer feels completely impossible to trust. Because Anaïs walks beside her. And inside this enormous ark drifting toward Mars, sometimes one person willing to walk alongside you while you find your footing again is already enough to feel like home.
